Choosing your new home

University-managed halls

The first choice for many students, our halls offer a safe and friendly environment to live in whilst studying at the Univerity of Plymouth. Living in university-managed halls will give you access to the Accommodation Team including our friendly live-in Hall Volunteers, University campus security and our exclusive Residence Life social programme of events, competitions and more.  Halls are located on campus or within the nearby student village, which is a couple of minutes’ walk from University facilities and nearby city-centre amenities. Our University-managed halls are accredited under parliament-approved Codes of Practice.

Private halls of residence

Private halls are managed by accredited private providers and offer a wide choice of rooms to suit personal lifestyle, location and budget.  These halls usually have communal areas for all residents to socialise in, and in-house management to assist with resident enquiries such as maintenance and post. Private halls are usually located in the city centre and popular student areas, within easy reach of the University of Plymouth main campus.

Houses and flats

Landlords on Plym Uni Homes manage their own properties - no agencies!.  Most properties are located within easy walking distance of the university and local amenities.  All properties will have enough cooking and washroom facilities for the number of tenants in the house, and many have communal areas, such a lounge or dining area where you can meet to socialise and relax.

Studios

Studio flats are self-contained flats containing bedroom/living and kitchen area in one room with a separate bathroom. You can find studio flats in university-managed halls, private halls and private accommodation. Please note that in a studio flat you don't share living facilities with other students, therefore this type of property is suitable for students who prefer to have their own space.

Homestay

If you are looking for a room in the landlords’ own home, we have a small supply of landlords that offer this in and around the Plymouth area.  Properties will be on a main bus route into the city.  We also have landlord homes in other areas, away from Plymouth, where students who are on placements can investigate for short periods of time is living away from the main campus in Plymouth for their placement.

House Hunting Advice

Money matters

Work out your budget for accommodation before you book your room, once you have signed your licence/tenancy agreement it is legally binding. You need to ensure that you have enough money to pay the rent and your day-to-day living costs.

What do you want from your home?

Think about the main things that you need from a room/property such as location, living with others, facilities, security, and lifestyle.  Our handy draw-a-search tool can help you see an overview of where the properties are in Plymouth.

Do your homework

Research what each property has to offer. In addition to reading our adverts, you should also view the properties to ensure they are the right option for you. University-managed halls can be viewed on open and applicant days throughout the year. You can arrange viewings directly with private halls and private landlords.

Advice

Understand your tenancy/licence before you sign it – get it explained to you by a member of Accommodation Services or the Student Union Advice Centre if necessary.
